What to Expect at a Wellness Exam
A wellness exam is a nose-to-tail health check.
It's how we catch issues early — long before your pet shows obvious symptoms. Pets are very good at hiding discomfort.
During the visit we:
1) Talk with you first
We'll ask about:
- eating + drinking habits
- bowel / urinary patterns
- activity level and mobility
- behavior changes
- any concerns you've noticed
This history is often the single most valuable diagnostic tool we have.
2) Physical examination
Your veterinarian will quietly and methodically evaluate:
- mouth/teeth (periodontal disease is silent early)
- eyes, ears, skin
- lymph nodes
- heart and lungs, with a stethoscope
- abdomen for organ size or discomfort
- joints for pain or decreased range of motion
- weight and body condition score (small trends matter!)
3) Preventive care review
We'll match care to lifestyle:
- vaccine recommendations
- parasite prevention (heartworm, fleas, ticks, worms)
- dental care plan
- nutrition guidance
- behavior & environment support
4) Screening tests when appropriate
These may include:
- fecal testing for intestinal parasites
- heartworm testing
- bloodwork + urine (especially in seniors)
- blood pressure (especially in cats)
These aren't just "add-ons" — they're how we catch hidden problems early, when they're easier (and less expensive) to manage.
